It is not clear how the ancient technique of lost wax casting found it's way along trading routes (perhaps from Egypt) to emerge in western Africa as early as the twelfth century.
Some work produced in early Benin and the Ife kingdoms resembles that found in Phoenician graves and shows some Mediterranean influences.
The powerful kings of Benin, Nigeria and surrounding countries adorned their palaces with bronzes, appointing master artists to their courts. Some Saharan and sub-Saharan populations later learned the craft and produced many different styles.
The ancient art of lost wax bronze casting survives today in Africa. Objects reminiscent of earlier art are still required to give power to those in need of it.
All of our bronzes are authenticated.
