Traditional African Art recognizes two major groups of activities: religious and magical. In the first group were the spirits connected with birth, puberty, marriage and death.
In the second magical group we find spirits whose benevolence was desired for the attainment of practical results.
Like the masks, African tribal sculpture is easily identified as to its tribal origins. The workmanship tells us much about the age, even sometimes the sculptor.
The exact purpose of each figure is often harder to determine. Although we know of the ritual we can only suspect which spirits were installed to make each peace come alive.
Interest in African tribal art is constantly increasing. The most stunning of African tribal figures, fetishes and dolls find their way into the great museum collections. As the objects become more rare, the value continues to increase rapidly.
All our African tribal figures and fetishes are authenticated and come with detailed descriptions. Some have substantial provenance.
